Description
I have spent decades teaching young hikers, scouts, and my own kids how to handle tools safely. The Opinel My First – Green shines in that role. The Sandvik stainless plastic-safe rounded tip blade reduces risk of poking accidents. The Virobloc locking ring securely locks the blade open during use and closed for storage or carrying. With a 74 mm blade, 175 mm overall length, and 37 g weight, it feels light in hand and manageable even for small hands.
The beech handle is warm and grippy though painted, so avoid leaving it wet for long periods or scrubbing harshly. Maintenance is simple: clean and dry after use, oil the hinge occasionally, hone the blade as needed round-tips sharpen differently but hold edge well.
Use it for trail meals, whittling, clearing tinder, bark crafting. With adult guidance it becomes part of memorable moments first whittles, first campfire prep, first lessons in responsibility. If you want a safe, skill-building gift that your child can grow skills with, this is a strong choice.
