Bowie Knives

The Bowie knife
The Bowie knife is a fixed blade hunting and survival knife created in the early 19th century by James Black for Jim Bowie. Bowie became famous for using a large knife in a duel, the “Sandbar Fight” – at least according to Wikipedia.
Originally a fighting knife
The Bowie knife was originally developed as a fighting knife and was used by soldiers as well as by bandits and robbers. Today it is mainly popular with collectors, but scouts and outdoor enthusiasts have also taken to the knife, which now comes in hundreds of variants.
A Bowie knife is easy to recognise by its curved blade and its crossguard.
Spanish knives from Cudeman
I have selected a whole range of Spanish Bowie knives. The Spanish have a long tradition of knifemaking, and Bowie knives are among the hallmarks of the Spanish maker Cudeman. I also stock a single Bowie knife from Winchester. After all, Winchester makes not only rifles and other weapons, but knives too.
The handle
Make sure you choose a knife with a handle that is big enough for your hand. Some of the knives from Cudeman have a relatively small handle. I state the size of the handle for each knife, so you can measure for yourself how it will fit. It is best to choose correctly the first time.
The sheath matters
A Bowie knife is a fairly sturdy knife, so a good sheath for carrying it is important. Sheaths come in canvas, synthetic leather and genuine leather. The price varies.
What matters is that you get the knife that suits you – whether that means your hand, your taste or your budget.
